Unmanned Aerial System Challenge

In 2013, KSC’s Rocket University (RU) team, along with partners from the University of Central Florida and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, participated in an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) “challenge” with NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) and Marshall Spaceflight Center (MSFC).

The purpose of the challenge was to design and manufacture a UAS and demonstrate operational capability by flying to a target on KSC property.  Goals of this challenge included engaging university partners not traditionally part of KSC’s typical outreach, collaborate with other NASA Centers, and demonstrate potential future capabilities of KSC.   Although KSC, JSC, and MSFC were each tasked with building their own UAS, there was much collaboration and discussion on design and implementation among Centers throughout the challenge.
