Developing Partnerships... Launching Dreams
The Prototype Development Laboratory (PDL) completed design and fabrication of an experimental setup for testing the Wheel Electrostatic Spectrometer (WES) at the Electrostatics & Surface Physics Lab. The WES is a set of sensors intended to be mounted on the outer surface of a rover’s wheels with the purpose of detecting soil/regolith composition using the tribo-electric effects between the sensors’ materials and the ground as the sensors meet and leave the ground throughout wheel rotation. The experimental apparatus rolls the WES over the surface of soil or regolith for one full rotation of the wheel. The apparatus is designed to minimize speed and normal force fluctuations.
