Corrosion Technology Lab

The Corrosion Technology Laboratory at the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is a network of people, equipment, and facilities that provide technical innovations and engineering services in all areas of corrosion for NASA and external customers.  KSC has also developed some corrosion technologies which are available for licensing.

The Corrosion Technology Laboratory:

  • Provides consulting and testing services for NASA and external customers
  • Conducts applied research
  • Develops new corrosion detection and control technologies
  • Investigates, evaluates, and determines materials performance and degradation in different environments in support of NASA, other Government organizations, industry, and educational institutions
  • Participates in educational outreach activities

KSC’s launch facilities are located within 1000 feet of the Atlantic Ocean.  Salt from the ocean combined with the launch vehicles’ acidic rocket exhaust make corrosion protection a high priority.  For these reasons, KSC maintains state-of-the-art corrosion research and testing capabilities.  Our Beach Corrosion Test Site has been documented as having higher atmospheric corrosion rates than any other test site in the United States.

The Corrosion Technology Laboratory is part of the Applied Technology Division and any project involving corrosion may utilize this fully staffed and equipped corrosion laboratory as a resource.

Accelerated Corrosion Laboratory

  • Continuous and cyclic salt fog exposure
  • Acid fog exposure
  • Accelerated weathering and UV testing
  • Other tests, including filiform corrosion

Applied Research

  • Coating development
  • Corrosion resistant materials and maintenance procedures for launch environments
  • Investigation of materials degradation in different environments
  • Long-term prediction of corrosion performance from accelerated tests
  • Detection of hidden corrosion
  • Self-healing coatings


  • Test and qualify coatings for the NASA Coatings Standard, NASA-STD-5008B
  • Test and qualify environmentally friendly coatings in support of the NASA TEERM Program
  • Develop technology for NASA KSC’s Ground Systems Development Organization Program
    • Smart Coatings for Corrosion Detection, Protection, and Self-Healing (5 patents and several pending)
    • Environmentally Friendly Corrosion Preventative Compounds (CPCs)
  • Provide Launch Support for the International Space Station
  • Collaborate with DoD, DoT, Coatings and Automotive Industry, Academia, and NASA OSMA
