Avionics Engineering

Avionics Engineering at KSC utilizes knowledge gained from decades of spaceflight experience - from processing and installation of flight hardware and payloads to testing and checkout of flight computers and flight software to checkout of guidance, navigation, flight controls, and propulsion avionics systems.

Avionics Engineering is supplemented by the Customer Avionics Interface Development and Analysis (CAIDA) lab which provides a high fidelity capability to interface customer avionics platforms with multiple systems both internal and external to KSC, with the KSC Launch Control System (LCS) being the largest customer.  Avionics Engineering also has an internal avionics lab to help in the development and test of avionics systems for various NASA projects.

Accomplishments

KSC’ Avionics Engineering team has supported/is supporting programs such as:

  • Space shuttle
  • International Space Station (ISS)
  • Expendable Launch Vehicles
  • NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion programs - design of avionics systems
  • Technology demonstration projects such as Plant Habitat and the Regolith and Environment Science and Oxygen and Lunar Volatile Extraction (RESOLVE) project.
